DMS Aquaculture Project History

The DeLand Middle School Aquaculture Project was started in 1988 and funded by the FFA and local businesses.  The project was started in order to teach the students the complete business cycle in American Economics.  When the project started there was only one tank containing 250 Tilapia and now there are 15,000 Tilapia, 22 Siberian Sturgeon, 4 Osetra Sturgeon, and as of 4/30/04 50+ Osetra Sturgeon have been placed in pond #3 at the land laboratory.  The number of fish has gone from 250 to 15,076.

DeLand Middle School produces over 15,000 pounds of Tilapia each
year and ONLY sells to local businesses.

The Sturgeon are NOT for sale and are used for research ONLY
